Paying contributions if I am simultaneously employed

Text

Have you decided to trade alongside employment? The obligation to pay contributions to the Social Insurance Agency in the event of simultaneous self-employment and employment is assessed separately for each situation. However, their combination may affect the amount of your insurance contributions.

How will I pay contributions?

1

Check your income levels

from self-employment (as a SEP/SZČO).

2

You will pay compulsory contributions:

  • only as an employee – if your income from self-employment does not exceed the statutory threshold determining the obligation of the SEP/SZČO to pay contributions (see more in the article When the SEP becomes obliged to pay contributions);
  • both as an employee and as a SEP/SZČO – if your income from self-employment exceeds the statutory threshold determining the obligation of the SEP to pay contributions (i.e. you are a compulsorily insured SEP/SZČO) and the sum of the assessment bases from both situations does not exceed the maximum assessment basis, then you pay contributions from the assessment bases actually achieved;
  • as an employee and to a reduced extent as a compulsorily insured SEP/SZČO – if the sum of your monthly income (assessment bases) as an employee and a SEP/SZČO exceeds the maximum assessment basis (from 1 January 2023, this is EUR 8 477). As a SEP/SZČO, you then pay contributions from the difference between the maximum assessment basis and the employee assessment basis.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Obsah

You always pay into the solidarity reserve fund from the entire SEP/SZČO entire assessment basis (in addition, from the maximum assessment basis).

What is my SEP/SZČO assessment basis?

Text

The amount of your assessment basis for the payment of contributions will be notified to you by the relevant Social Insurance Agency branch.

If you want to calculate it yourself, proceed as follows:

  1. Add together the partial tax base from row 45 of the personal income tax return for the calendar year + contributions paid to the Social Insurance Agency for that year + contributions paid to the health insurer for that year.
  2. Divide the total by a coefficient of 1.486 to obtain the annual assessment basis.
  3. Divide the resulting amount by 12 to obtain the monthly assessment basis from which you will pay contributions.

Important note:

  • if your monthly assessment basis is lower than the minimum assessment basis specified for the relevant year (from 1 January 2023, this is EUR 605.50), you will pay the contributions from the minimum assessment basis (minimum contributions); and
  • if your monthly assessment basis is higher than the maximum assessment basis specified for the relevant year (from 1 January 2023, this is EUR 8 477), you will pay the contribution from the maximum assessment basis (maximum contributions).

(The minimum and maximum assessment basis always changes on 1 January of each calendar year.)
